Knowing how to clean car windows without streaks is much more about method than product. A mediocre cleaner used properly will beat an excellent one used in direct sun with a single towel.
Here is the full method, in order.
Work in shade, on cool glass
The most important rule, and the one most often broken.
On hot glass, cleaner evaporates before you can spread it evenly. Dried residue creates a pattern. That is your streak.
Early morning, evening, or a shaded spot. If the glass is too hot to rest your palm on comfortably, wait.
Wash first if the glass is dirty
Glass cleaner is not a substitute for washing. If there is visible grit, dust or bird mess on the windows, rinse it off first.
Wiping a gritty surface with a towel drags that grit across the glass. At best you get streaks. At worst, fine scratches.
Use two microfiber towels
This is the difference between a good result and a bad one, and it costs nothing.
The first towel, lightly damp with cleaner, lifts the film off the glass. But the film is now suspended in the moisture sitting on the surface — it has not left the car. If you let that air-dry, the film settles straight back down.
The second, completely dry towel buffs while the surface is still slightly damp. That is the step that actually removes it.
Spray the towel, not the glass
Spraying directly mists your dashboard, instrument cluster and infotainment screen. It also hits paint and wiper arms.
Spraying the towel gives you better control. Too much cleaner is as bad as too little.
Work one panel at a time
Do not spray the whole car and then start wiping. By the time you reach the last window, the first has dried.
One window, wipe, buff, move on. On a large windshield, split it into two halves and treat them separately.
Use different directions on each face
The trick that saves the most time in the long run.
Clean the outside with vertical passes and the inside with horizontal ones. When you spot a streak afterwards, the direction of the streak tells you immediately which face it is on.
Without this, you may clean the outside three times. Meanwhile, the streak stays on the inside.
Do not forget the top edge of the side windows
Roll each side window down two inches and clean the strip that normally sits inside the door seal. It collects grime, and if you skip it you get a dirty band appearing every time the window goes down.
Check it properly to clean car windows without streaks
Glass always looks clean in a garage. You need light at an angle to judge it.
Park facing a low sun, or check at night. That is when film shows. Step back and look from several angles.
Look after the towels
Wash glass towels separately from wheel and paint towels — those carry grit and product residue.
No fabric softener, ever. It coats microfiber fibers and destroys their absorbency, which is the entire point of the material. Air-dry rather than tumble drying on high heat.
A softener-washed towel will smear on glass. People often replace good cleaner because of this.
The summary
Cool glass, in shade. Wash first if dirty. Two towels, one damp and one dry. Spray the cloth. One panel at a time. Vertical outside, horizontal inside. Buff while damp. Check against angled light.
