The Best Way to Clean Inside Your Windshield Before Winter

Most people clean their windshields incorrectly. This is why drivers often see streaks when the low sun hits the glass. Doing it properly takes ten minutes. It is worth doing before the clocks go back.

Here is the full method and common mistakes. We also explain why the interior face deserves priority in winter.

The best way to clean inside your windshield starts with what is on it

The haze on the inside is not road dirt. The cabin is sealed. It is a film of evaporated plasticisers. These condensed onto the coldest hard surface in the car.

This matters for method, because a bonded oily film behaves differently from loose dust. Wiping it with a dry cloth simply smears it. Ordinary glass cleaner dissolves the top of it and lets the rest settle back down as it evaporates. You need something that breaks the bond, plus mechanical action from the applicator.

What you need before you start

Two microfiber cloths. One damp, one bone dry. This single detail separates a good result from a bad one and costs nothing.

Cool glass and shade. Not a windshield warmed by sun. On hot glass, product flashes off before you have spread it and leaves half-dried residue behind.

Twenty minutes and no rush. Rushing this is how you end up doing it twice.

No paper towel. It sheds lint on glass and can micro-scratch if any grit is present. Microfiber only.

The method, step by step

1. Move the seat back and recline it. You need to get your shoulders into the space under the windshield. Fighting the angle from a normal driving position is why the bottom edge always gets missed.

2. Lightly dampen the glass. Just enough to lift loose dust. Not so wet that anything runs down onto the dashboard.

3. Apply the product to the cloth, not the glass. Overspray on your instrument cluster and infotainment screen is at best a nuisance and at worst damaging.

4. Work in horizontal passes. Side to side across the glass, overlapping each pass. Save vertical passes for the exterior face so streak direction tells you which side a problem is on.

5. Work one section at a time. Split the windshield into thirds. Clean a third, wipe it dry, then move to the next. Never treat the whole screen and come back.

6. Buff dry while still slightly damp. The dry cloth is what actually removes the lifted film. Letting it air-dry puts that film straight back onto the glass.

7. Do the bottom edge deliberately. Fold the cloth over your fingertips and press into the corner where glass meets dash. This is where the film is thickest and where most people stop short.

The mistakes that cause streaks

Working in direct sun is the most common mistake. Using one cloth is second. Third is using microfiber washed with fabric softener. This coating destroys the fibres' absorbency. These cloths smear with any product. People then routinely blame the cleaner.

Fourth is cleaning the whole windshield before wiping. This guarantees the first section dries before you reach it.

Checking the result properly

Interior glass looks flawless under garage lighting. You need light at an angle. Park facing a low sun. Or check it after dark under a streetlight. Horizontal streaks mean you missed the inside. Vertical streaks mean it is on the outside.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the inside need cleaning?

Clean every two to three months for most cars. Do it more often for new vehicles. Fresh plastics off-gas heavily. Do it more often if anyone smokes in the car.

Should I do the inside or outside first?

Clean the inside first. If you do the outside first, you will see the interior film. You might assume you failed.

What if it is still hazy after both faces?

Inspect the glass in daylight with the sun low behind you. Years of highway grit sandblast the surface into thousands of tiny pits, and worn wipers score arcs into it. Neither can be cleaned off. That is a replacement conversation.

Doing it before winter, not during

Interior film makes fogging worse as well as glare, because condensation nucleates far more readily on a contaminated surface. Clearing it in October means the whole winter is easier.

ClearVision™ Glass Cleaner handles both faces. Dampen lightly. Press the sponge until foam appears. Clean with even horizontal passes. Wipe off with a dry microfiber cloth before residue dries.
